We came across a FREE basketball hoop (roadside find) that adjusts from very low for the girls to full height for the boys, with a very nice plexiglass backboard. For the cost of about $15 worth of concrete, a $15 sleeve, and $10 worth of rebar, we now have a setup worth several hundred dollars.
Step 1: Employ a little slave labor.
Step 2: Allow the slave to have a little fun midway through. (What a SKINNY slave!)
Step 3: Spray paint a rough edge for the pad and dig a square footer. Verify rebar will fit properly around the sleeve.
Step 4: With hole at 5 ft depth, remove rebar for insertion in wet concrete later. Notice the sleeve on the driveway.
Step 5: Build a form from 2x4's and put in place. Mix concrete in wheelbarrow and pour in hole, stopping halfway to re-insert rebar and sleeve. Use a 2x4 inserted in the sleeve and a level to make sure the sleeve is perfectly vertical prior to concrete set up. Float the top surface with a slightly downward slope away from the driveway. Pour leftover concrete into the actual basketball pole, filling it about halfway.
Step 6: Allow concrete to dry for a week, then insert the pole into the sleeve and tighten in place using hardware provided.
Step 7: Remove the form and back fill the edges with dirt and grass seed.
Step 8: Allow the slave labor to give it a try!
